Liquidation heatmap: where leveraged positions get liquidated

A liquidation heatmap marks the price levels where large amounts of leveraged positions would be force-closed. Long liquidations sit below the current price, short liquidations above it. Below is a live Bitcoin liquidation map; in the Fluxion app, every coin’s detail screen has its own.

How to read a liquidation heatmap

  • The dashed line is the current price.
  • Bars below it are long liquidation clusters: if the price falls to that level, those longs are force-sold.
  • Bars above it are short liquidation clusters: if the price rises to that level, those shorts are force-bought.
  • A longer bar means more position value at that level. The percentage shows how far the price would have to move to get there.

Why liquidation levels matter

A liquidation is a forced market order. When the price reaches a large cluster, many positions close at once, and that extra buying or selling can speed up the move — a liquidation cascade.

Traders check liquidation maps to see where leverage is crowded, to keep their own stop-loss away from crowded levels, and to understand sudden wicks after they happen.

Estimates and real positions

Most exchanges don’t publish every position’s liquidation price, so a liquidation heatmap is an estimate built from open interest, leverage, funding and price data. On Hyperliquid, positions are public on-chain, so Fluxion can also show the real liquidation prices of whale positions (“The Cliff” in the app). The two answer different questions and don’t claim the same number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a liquidation heatmap?

A chart of the price levels where leveraged long and short positions would be liquidated, sized by how much position value sits at each level.

What is the difference between long and short liquidations?

A long is liquidated when the price falls to its liquidation price, which forces a sale. A short is liquidated when the price rises to its liquidation price, which forces a buy.

Is a Bitcoin liquidation map a prediction?

No. It shows where liquidations would happen if the price reached those levels. It does not say whether the price will get there.

How often is the data updated?

This page refreshes its data about once a minute. The app shows live data.

Which coins are covered?

This site has pages for BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, HYPE and DOGE. In the app, you can open the liquidation map from any coin’s detail screen; the free plan includes limited previews.
